From the Back Cover --

School gardens are being grown in Hawai‘i to teach math, communication skills, environmental sustainability, and the cultural concepts of lokahi, mālama, and aloha—working together in harmony and love of the land. This guidebook is a collection of experiences in growing school gardens. Some are surprising, like the school where a five-year-old bundle of energy (sometimes kids like this have just been written off as “problem children”) led the way in creating a school garden and a class whose garden experience resulted in a prize-winning song and performance. Others, like the school which sells its produce to fund field trips, are models of creativity. All provide clues and assistance to others who are contemplating starting a school garden. In addition to the case studies, Growing an Educational Garden at Your School includes as invaluable section of how-to’s in planning for success before you begin to dig and a detailed resources list of books, videos, Internet sites, and even possible funding sources for garden projects. Colleen Carroll, director of  NatureTalks, has worked in environmental education in Hawai‘i for nearly twenty years. Other publications she has authored include Ten Native Trees for Urban Landscapes, Directory of Sources for Native Hawaiian Plants and The Growing Seed: Wiliwili Project. Her background includes degrees in plant science, social ecology and a doctorate in education. Currently, she is compiling stories of edible landscapes throughout Hawai‘i for a new book showcasing this unique aspect of Hawai‘i’s urban forest. NatureTalks, founded by Dr. Carroll in 1999, is an educational company designed to work with communities and educational groups to improve their relationship with the outdoor environment. NatureTalks focuses on program development and research in the urban forest and community in Hawai‘i and elsewhere.
