The major paper mills
whose uncoated paper we print your books on have increased the brightness of standard offset paper from 84 to
92. Whatever these particular numbers may stand for, this change
does mean the normal, house stock uncoated paper is now brighter. There is
no change in quality, durability, acid-free nature, or (they say)
cost.
Premium opaque bright white papers will also
increase in brightness.
This change has been fully
implemented, and all of our papers are now the newer,
brighter paper.
This paper IS visibly brighter. It prints very well, and
images look better on the new paper.
The older, less bright paper
will no longer be available. This may affect you
because reprints of existing books will normally be printed
on the brighter paper.
In addition, the mills have
recently stopped supplying the vellum finish paper we have used in
the past, and only the smooth finish is available for offset
text. This paper is thinner (but has the same weight), due
to the difference in finish. This may affect you because
reprints of existing books will (of necessity) be printed on
this thinner paper.
